The most vivid and cherished memories of my teenage life include spending time at the Thies house. Time chatting in the kitchen with Lola, watching her make homemade fried chicken (something I never had before), maybe after Mike or Lola took my best friend Lacey and I to pick out movies from Blockbuster, as we did many Friday nights. Lola’s sort of wry sense of humor and was so different and funny to me, and permeated through her whole family and though I didn’t know at the time it it affected me as well. Lola taught her kids to love people so well and so wholly because she loved God first. She had a beautiful and godly life, I’m so grateful for it.

Oh where to begin…. Lola was my first cousin my first best friend we always wanted to be sisters. When we were very young, we always wanted to be together. She was the country girl and I always lived in the city. We would stay at each others houses, but I always wanted to be at Lola’s house out in the country where we would ride snowy and try to ride snipper and stubby the stubborn shetlands. We would stay up in the mulberry tree house tree eating as many mulberries as we could, playing cowboys and Indians or whatever our imagination would take us. We made forts in the coral and play hide and seek kick the can and lay on our backs and listen to stories Aunt Jackie would tell us while looking into to summer night sky waiting for shooting stars so we could make our wishes. Those are days I will cherish forever. After high school we didn’t see each other as often as would have liked as distance and life was always at hand but whenever time would allow we always caught up on the phone or a quick visit we would talk for hours, giggling crying laughing I will miss Lola but know she is pain free makes the time until we meet again much easier. Hugs and prayers to all who loved and were blessed to have her in your life I love you Lola❤️🙏❤️ Deb

Lola was beautiful in heart, mind and soul. Our friendship was short but the impact was powerful, she will be greatly missed. May she rest in the arms of our Lord.

Lola welcomed us to the neighborhood in 2015. She loved to sit on her front porch and greet anyone who went by. She was always up for a afternoon chat. Mike, she was so proud of you. She loved talking about her children, Jesse, Monica, Lacey and Joe. Her many grandchildren brought her so much joy. She will be watching you all from above. Her warm smile is missed already. Thoughts and prayers to her family.

Lola and Mike welcomed us to the neighborhood when we moved in. Lola was always up for sitting on her front porch and talk about anything and everything. Especially her 4 children and all her grandkids. Their house seems to explode when ever family came to visit. I already miss our afternoon chats. Mike, Jesse, Monica, Lacey and Joe, I know in my heart she is watching over you all. Thoughts and prayers to you all.

Mike, Jesse, Monica, Lacey, and Joe, Lola was a very special person to so many. I knew instantly, from her bright smile when I first met her, that we would be close friends. Lola and I did so much together…when I lived in Lawrence, she was my movie buddy. We’d catch a flick on a Friday or Saturday and laugh or cry together watching it. We went shopping, I watched her cook (she was quite the chef, and I was envious) and we shared personal stories, whether it was something joyous or something sad. We had so many laughs together and I loved the nights on the patio or days on the porch, just talking about life. She helped me grow and gave me motherly advice, even though we aren’t far apart in age. One thing that always struck me was the fact that wherever we went, whether it was a restaurant, the grocery store, or the movie theater, Lola always ran into a friend. Always! I once asked her “Is there anyone in this town you DON’T know”? But that was her…a friend to everyone. I know I don’t have to tell you this, but Lola was so proud of all of you. She loved you so much and was always keeping me updated on how you were all doing. Of course, the grandkids…she was so proud of them, too, and just beamed while talking about them and sharing pictures. Lola had faith in God, and I know she is with Him now. Always know that she will be watching over all of you. I cherished Lola and valued our friendship, and will always hold her dear to my heart. My deepest condolences to you. Please let me know if there’s anything you need. I love you all.

So very sorry for your loss! The Graff’s, Burge’s and Hatfield’s kids all grew up together! So remember how Lola always had a smile on her face and laughter! She was so much like her Mom, Jackie. Please accept my sympathies as I am out of town and will not be back in time. My heart aches for you all! My love, Jody Graff Suchan

Lola welcomed us to the neighborhood in Lawrence shortly after we moved in; she and Mike continued to be wonderful neighbors while we lived there for the next three years. We attended the same church. Even after we moved, there was a package that was delivered to our Lawrence address by mistake. It was a table. Mike and Lola stored it in their garage until we could drive from Salina and pick it up; such good people! I had not heard of her illness. My heart aches for all of you; you are in our prayers!

Lola was such a generous, kind, and beautiful person. I consider her one of my dearest friends and make many of her recipes including chili, Runzas, and bbq green beans. She adored her children and grandchildren, and her family meant the world to her. I will miss her beautiful smile and contagious laughter, as well as her generosity and friendship. Sending my love and prayers to all her family.
