Julia McCord

July 26, 1941 - August 24, 2023

Julia McCord, former Omaha World-Herald religion reporter, died on August 24, 2023, from complications of cancer. She was 82 years old.  Born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1941, she grew up on a turkey farm near the hamlet of Lisco in the Nebraska Panhandle.

She remained a western Nebraska girl all her life. She loved God, her family, her country, the piano music of Bach and Debussy, the conservative movement, gourmet cooking, Husker volleyball and good detective/spy novels.

McCord was mother of Carla (Mark Albers), Susan and Lance, proud grandmother of Krista, Wesley, Eric, Anna and Jackson, and great-grandmother of Victoria.

Julia provided a very touching tribute to 1 of our family relatives when she was with the Omaha World-Herald. Her article was truly heartfelt. Will be thinking of all members of her family, and the many friends that she made throughout her career in journalism & music, in the hours & days ahead.

My sympathy to you, Carla, Susan, and Lance. It was a pleasure to know your Mom—and all of you—and watch her determination and energy when she lived on campus and worked on her journalism degree. Blessings as you celebrate her life and grieve her death.

Around three years ago our grandson started working for Julia on Saturday mornings. He would tell us how much he enjoyed their Sat morning conversations while he moved furniture, lifted boxes to shelves she couldn’t reach and did numerous odd jobs around her apartment. This impressionable teen was very impressed with his dear friend. Thank you Julia for showing Canaan that friends come in all ages. Our deepest sympathy to the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
