John Franklin “Bj” Aman

August 13, 1948 - August 9, 2023

John Franklin “Bj” Aman, 74, of Lincoln passed away August 9, 2023. Born August 13, 1948, in Quincy, IL to B. Rex and Agnes (Gumbel) Aman.

John was a retired founding partner of the law firm, Aman & Aman Attorneys at Law, where he devoted himself to leaving a lasting positive impact on his clients’ lives. He attended the University of Texas, University of North Texas, Doane College, and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Rho, and Gamma Rho Fraternities.

John was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and active in the Lincoln Elks Lodge #80 where he held many positions over the years, including that of Exalted Ruler. A trustee and talented amateur chef, John was famous for his St. Patty’s Day feast. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and serving as a canoe guide in the Boundary Waters of northeastern Minnesota.

John had an extensive construction background and was proud of the old houses he refurbished. He wrote a book entitled “Riverwalk.” The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Sean and Katherine Stewart and family, and to Jason Jirsa for all of their love and support; they cared for John as one of their own.

Mr. Aman served as a valued member of a judicial nominating commission, which I chaired, that was responsible for verifying the qualifications of applicants to be appointed by the Governor to be a judge in certain Nebraska courts. He performed that role with dignity and fairness to all applicants. He was respected and admired for that service.

The way I remember, John is how much he was able to to do under nearly impossible odds. John was cool, that’s why many critiqued him. He advocated for those deemed by the state of Nebraska as “undesirable”, I know that personally. The man had a unique ability to seemingly slow time. When you can’t do anything, you do what you can. Thank you John for the support and encouragement to persevere when faced with the ultimate fear of uncertainty.

John and I went to high school together. Whenever we saw each other he always had a smile and cheerful word. We did not stay in touch except for the brief moments during reunions but I have fond memories of his being. Sending thoughts and prayers for healing.

Dear Aman family, It is with great sadness that we learned of BJ’s passing. He was a great friend and we wondered why we hadn’t heard from him as he usually showed up in August for the Fisherman’s Picnic. John was bigger than life figuratively and literally with a personality to match! John took his conversion to Catholicism very seriously and I know he is in the arms of his Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ! Rest in peace dear Friend.

Dear Aman family, I was very sad to see that Mr. A had died. I have good memories of working with Charles and his dad on various construction jobs around town. One particular memory that stands out is helping Charles with his Eagle scout project around 2008 or so. Mr. A came along. He knew that I had 2 left feet with construction tasks but still welcomed me. We worked on the project and grilled steak that night. Mr. A taught me you always have a fresh tomato with your steak. I still do that to this day. I wish the Aman family God’s peace during this difficult time and pray Mr. A’s soul can rest in peace.
