John D. Monhollon

February 1, 1935 - November 2, 2022

John David Monhollon, 87, of Cortland, passed away November 2, 2022. He was born February 1, 1935 in Whiting, KS to James C. and Johanna Sophia (Davidson) Monhollon. He worked for Atchison Topeka and the Santa Fe Railroad for 42 years as an Assistant Car Distributor in Topeka and Argentine, Kansas. John served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. Serving on Bases in Texas, Iceland and Missouri.

John graduated from Effingham High School in 1953. John married Erma L. Simmons on January 31, 1959 and this union blessed them with three children.

Over the years, John lived in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and finally settled in Nebraska. In each, he committed himself to serving the community to the fullest.  John was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Highland KS (Smithton #1) and The Order of The Eastern Star (Wathena Chapter #413). He is a Past Worship Master, Meriden Lodge #399 and Past Worthy Patron of The Order of The Eastern Star (Meriden, Tonganoxie and Wathena Chapters).  He served as an Associate Guardian for Jobs Daughters and as an Advisor for DeMolay Chapter in Topeka, KS.  John dedicated his time and service as a member of the Board of Education for Jefferson West School District USD 340. John was an active member of the Lincoln Berean Church and was involved in starting two new churches in Colorado.

John was a people person who had many talents which included woodworking, working with sheet metal, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking in the mountains.

Family members include his wife, Erma, of Cortland, NE; sons Jeffery (Michelle) Monhollon of Roca, NE and Jay (Sherri) Monhollon of Berryton, KS; daughter Glenda (Earl) Simmons of Marysville, KS; several beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Lyda Amon; one brother, James C. Monhollon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glen J. Davidson and Paul E. Monhollon; one granddaughter-n-law; and one great grandson.

Celebration of life will be at 10:30 AM on March 11, 2023 at the Lincoln Berean Church on 70th street with a lunch to follow.

Family requests no flowers or plants.  Memorials to Cottonwood Hospice Foundation and Nebraska Hematology Oncology.

I have too many great memories of John and Erma to share in this small space. From building a church congregation to riding snowmobiles and constructing a church building: John was willing and able to do more than expected as he poured his heart into the Lord’s work.
