He moved to Waverly in 1977 and began grade school in 1981. He was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Waverly his 8th grade year. During high school Joel participated in football, basketball, track and golf. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1995.
He worked several different jobs over the years, from Cole Publishing in Lincoln to Managing Comfort Inn and Suites in Kearney and lastly at Zoetis in Lincoln. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed his coworkers.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Waverly. He enjoyed ushering with his father the past few years. Over the years he really enjoyed playing golf with his brother, dad and friends.
He was known and loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Family members include his parents David and Mavis Nielson; sister Christina Jueneman (Brian); brother Andrew Nielson (Erica), all reside in Waverly; 1 niece and 4 nephews – Kyla, Kolton, Caleb, Aiden and Camden.
Funeral service: 12:00 pm Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Peace Lutheran Church, 9831 N 145th St., Waverly, NE. Private burial in Rosehill Cemetery.
Visitation with family present from 6-7:30 pm Monday, November 3, 2025, Roper and Sons Waverly Chapel.
