Herman Jacob Gorz, 94, Lincoln, passed away Sunday (5/17/15). He was born (11/22/20) in Eagle River, Wisconsin to Louis and Katharine Gorz. Retired supervisory research geneticist, US Department of Agriculture and Professor of Agronomy, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 35 years; Associate Professor of Agronomy North Dakota State University, Fargo, 3 ½ years; assistant county extension agent, Port Washington, Wisconsin, ½ year; and high school teacher of vocational agriculture, Wausaukee, Wisconsin, 3 years. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as President of the congregation and Elder. Member of honorary fraternities Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Xi; Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, and Crop Science Society of America. He received a USDA Distinguished Service Award. Received his Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Family members include daughters and sons-in-law: Marily and Jack Priefert, Hebron, Jean and Tim Swanson, Geneva, Switzerland; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin and Katarina Swanson; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Ann Gorz, Rhinelander, Wis; sister-in-law Rowena Gorz, Algoma, Wis. Preceded in death by his wife Jeanette after 60 years of marriage; his parents, brothers Carl, Edmund, Walter and Arthur; sisters Mathilda, Katharine, Elsie and Elenor.
Funeral service: 11a.m. Friday (5/22/15) Redeemer Lutheran Church, 510 South 33rd. Pastor Mark Ebert, officiating.
Visitation: 2p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Roper and Sons, 4300 ‘O’ Street and one hour prior to service time at the church.
