Helen L. Houfek, 90, formerly of Lincoln, passed away of natural causes Sunday (8/17/08) in Waterloo. She was born April 14, 1918, at home near Malmo, NE ,to Walter and Clara (Anderson) Lindgren. After High school in Wahoo, she attended Luther College in Wahoo then taught school at Districts 45 and 88 in the area. She later attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis and married Richard J. Houfek of Prague. NE. After several years living in Minnesota and then on several farms in Saunders county, the family moved to Lincoln in 1957. She worked many years as a bookkeeper for Kings Food Hosts then Latsches, and retired in 1983. They served and fellowshipped for nearly fifty years at St Andrews Lutheran Church in Lincoln. They moved to Papillion NE in early 2007 to be closer to family. She was currently at home with son Joel and family at Waterloo.
She is survived by sons, Dan and wife Margaret (Colorado Springs), Nathan and wife Linda (Omaha), Joel and wife Lee (Waterloo); daughter Rebecca Scholten and husband Dale (Mission Viejo, CA); twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren; brothers Robert of Malmo and Roger of Johnstown, CO; sister Jean Erickson of Mead, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, husband Richard, sister Lavern Vermeline and brother Duane.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, (8/23/08) at Edensburg Lutheran Church, Malmo, NE. Burial near Malmo.
Memorials: St Andrews Lutheran Church or Edensburg Lutheran Church.
Visitation: One hour prior to service time at the Church
