Obituary

Hayganus “Anoush” Gulec Stoddart

February 3, 1936 - October 9, 2023

Hayganus “Anoush” Stoddart, 87, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died October 9, 2023, in her home surrounded by her children.

Anoush was born February 3, 1936, to Garabet and Bayzar Gulec in Istanbul, Turkey. She was the youngest of three girls, with Vihanus and Arshaguhi preceding her in death.

Anoush met her husband Henry in Turkey, where they married and had two daughters, Helen and Carol.  Soon after they moved to Henry’s hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, where they settled and had their third child, Thomas.  Coming to America was a dream of Anoush’s.  She was so proud of the day she received her United States citizenship.

Anoush was a lover of life.  She was an extremely skilled seamstress, and also taught herself to do many things of which she didn’t have the opportunity to do in Turkey.  She learned to drive a car, snow ski, belly dance, play bridge and traveled extensively.  Later, she ran an Airbnb in her home and gained many new and precious friendships. Above all, Anoush had magic fingers that could sew, quilt, knit or cook just about anything. Her home, flowers and gardening were also her passion.

She was preceded in death by her husband Henry and survived by her cat Luna, and three children, Helen Janet Russell (Bobby) of Lincoln, Caroline Mary Stoddart (Sean) of Columbia, Missouri, and Thomas Henry Stoddart of Lincoln.

She loved her grandchildren so much. Jonas, Erika, Rachel, Graham, Nathan and Nathan will always be in her heart.  She was known as “Yaya” to her 9 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Traditions Hospice Care and their wonderful nurses and aides for over 3 years of wonderful care and companionship for their mother.

A celebration of Anoush’s life will be Saturday November 4th at 12pm at Roper and Son’s Funeral Home (4300 O St., Lincoln). Donations may be made in her honor to St. Jude’s, NAMI, or charity of choice.
