Harvey James Hales, 90, Lincoln, died Saturday (9-6-08) in Bennet. Born in San Marcial, New Mexico (5-7-1918) to Percy G. and Bertha (Stevens) Hales and grew up in Brownsville, TX. Following high school and technical training he worked with the CCC in Arizona. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1940. While training in Lincoln he met his future wife, Betty Jane Kingery. They married in Victoria, TX in 1941. Harvey served in the Philippines and Japan in the 5th Air Force. After leaving the service in 1945 he joined Kingery Construction as a carpenter, superintendent and partner. His work gave him a strong sense of accomplishment. Harvey was a member of the Carpenter’s Union, VFW and American Legion. He and Betty traveled extensively in this country and abroad. More recently he has attended numerous Elder Hostels. He was a talented woodcarver and gardener. His greenhouse was a real source of pleasure for him and others. Harvey was a lover of nature and a longtime benefactor of the Children’s Zoo.
Family members include daughters: Cherie Hales, Winona, MN; Denise (Ed) Mundorf, Bennet; granddaughter: Katya Hales, Minneapolis, MN; sister: Gene (Wilmer) Roland, Fort Washington, MD. Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty, parents, brother, Gilford Hales.
Memorial Service: 3:00 p.m. Thursday (9-11-08) Roper and Sons Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street. Debbie Way, Life Celebrant officiating. Prior private interment.
Family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, funeral home.
