George L. Lamphear

March 12, 1940 - November 29, 2025

George L. Lamphear was born on March 12, 1940, in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, to John Sr. and Ida (McFarland) Lamphear. When he was still very young, the family moved to Lincoln, where George grew up in Havelock, a place that became the backdrop for countless adventures. He was an endlessly curious and daring boy, and the stories he told of those escapades could captivate an entire room.

As a young teen, George caught a glimpse of the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He went home and told his mother, with perfect certainty, that he would marry her someday. And in 1961, he did just that. His marriage to Gloria F. Walek was the fulfillment of a dream and the beginning of a partnership filled with devotion, humor, and unwavering love. Together they built a home where laughter was abundant and their daughters, Julie and Traci, grew up knowing the warmth of parents who adored them.

George spent his career as a Machinist with Burlington Northern Railroad, where he was fondly known as “the grumpy old man.” He would grin and remind his coworkers that while he might be grumpy, he was the nicest grumpy old man they’d ever meet. His good-hearted nature, humor, and loyalty made him unforgettable to those who worked alongside him.

A collector at heart, George had an eye for the rare, the strange, and the wonderfully unique. From cool cars to antiques and obscure treasures, he was the man people sought out when they needed something unusual—because he was the man who somehow always had at least one of everything. His lawn was kept with the same meticulous care, becoming the envy of the neighborhood. Every detail mattered to him—every blade of grass, every prized possession, every soul he loved—each cared for with pride.

Above all, George cherished his family. He is survived by his daughters Julie Thomas (Adrian) and Traci Wardman; his grandchildren Ben Swanson (Heather), Logan Cleverly (Dallin), and Chase Wardman; and his great-grandchildren Jackson, Emma, Cooper, and another sweet baby Cleverly expected in June 2026. To all of them, he gave a love that was deep, steadfast, and fiercely returned.

George is preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate, Gloria; his parents; and his siblings Jackie, Betty, John Jr., and Ken.

Generous, loyal, funny, and loved by so many, George lived a life rich with story, family, and heart. His presence shaped the lives around him, and his memory will continue to do so—quietly, proudly, and with enduring joy.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at the Isles Reception Hall on Havelock Ave., on January 3, 2026, from 2-6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to benefit Tabitha Hospice, honoring the compassionate care they provide.
