Obituary

Gary Lee Ahl

December 6, 1947 - October 20, 2025

Gary Lee Ahl, husband to Deb. Together, they raised their 3J’s – Jenn (Robb) Seckinger, Jessica (Cade) Olbricht, and Judi (Chad) Lessard. He was a proud Papa to his 6 grands, Piper and Kira Seckinger, Tristan and Emma Olbricht, Silas and Nyah Lessard.  He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn Ahl-Clark and many dear family and friends. Preceded in death by daughter, Jenn.

Born in Seward, Nebraska, on December 6, 1947. Gary graduated from Kearney State College in 1971. He began his love for farming by working for Al Wink in Kearney, Nebraska through college before moving to Lincoln, where he spent the rest of his life. For 40 years, Gary was dedicated to Pathology Medical Services as a Financial Controller.

A survivor of the 1952 polio epidemic, Gary never let his physical challenges slow him down. He learned to water ski, snow ski, play racquetball, golf and was always committed to his daughters’ activities and family togetherness.

Gary and his wife, Deb, built a wonderful life together in Lincoln’s Eastridge community, where they lived together for 48 years. He nurtured many neighborhood relationships by always being the one to call to lend a helping hand, whether it was to shovel snow or help build a shed.

He loved his time at the farm in Gosper County, Nebraska and in Nevis, Minnesota. During his retirement, he found joy working with the Companeros family and his Owl Lake community.  He found his spirituality in nature – hunting and fishing, crane watching, the loons and swans on Owl Lake, and cruising the backroads of Nebraska. He loved teaching and playing cards and games with his kids and grandkids. He was endlessly helpful – never afraid to take on a project, whether it was fixing a leaky faucet or refinishing antique furniture.

Gary was “Dad” to his 3J’s, his sons-in-law, and “stand-in-Dad” for others. Gary will be remembered for his steady kindness, resourcefulness, and deep devotion to his family and friends.

Services to celebrate Gary will be Friday, October 24, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at First Plymouth Church 2000 D Street Lincoln, NE.

In recognition of some of Gary’s special charities, memorials can be directed to Tabitha Meals on Wheels or Mourning Hope or humanitarian of charities of your choice.

I’m so sorry to see that Gary has passed. I worked with Gary at PMS, and what a wonderful man! So calm, sincere and caring. I never saw him mad or disrespectful. We all loved working with Gary! My sympathy to his family and friends.

October 22, 2025 I met Gary 15 or more years ago, cousin to my wife, Joyce. Our first meeting left me with the impression that here was a genuinely sincere person, attentive, full of consideration and sensibilities imparted over a lifetime of doing. We so often talked about cars and houses – repairing, maintaining, improving them. Being in Colorado, we still met numerous times whenever he and Deb traveled here, when Joyce and I traveled through Nebraska, when we all spent a glorious weekend watching (and hearing!) the Sandhill Crane migration in Kearney. During a trip to their property near Holbrook, Nebraska, Gary told me the most sections on a pivot irrigation system he ever counted was 16. I still count the sections when I drive by them. Gary was ready with tax information – always there to sort out rules and implications. Gary always had a pen and paper in his shirt pocket. One time he explained to us why he did this. When I once had a question about the Sand Hills of Nebraska, he produced them and drew a map to illustrate their location to me. I have self declared that in memoriam to Gary, every October 20th I will wear a shirt with a pocket and in it place a pen and paper to honor his memory. I believe that Jenn and God decided it was time for Gary to come home. I will miss him. The world will miss him. Rest easy from an active life well lived, Gary. God Bless Gary Ahl. I worked with Gary in the business office for the pathology group for 18 years. He was such a kind man and very patient with all the challenges that we faced over the years. Sending my sincere sympathy to Deb and his family.
