Obituary

Dr. Timothy R. Lieske

February 12, 1952 - October 14, 2024

Dr. Timothy R. Lieske, 72, of Lincoln, NE passed away Monday, October 14, 2024, surrounded by family.  Tim was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Tim was born February 12, 1952, to Gerald and Renee (Johnson) Lieske and grew up in Upland, NE. After graduating from Minden High School in 1970, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for his undergraduate degree and later earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

He then completed his Internal Medicine Residency in Kalamazoo Michigan before serving in the US Air Force as Chief of Staff in Altus, Oklahoma from 1979-1982.

Following his time in the Air Force, he completed his Pulmonary Fellowship at University of Missouri in Columbia, MO

In August 1984, Tim moved to Lincoln and started his practice, Lincoln Pulmonary and Critical Care where he continued until his retirement in December of 2019. In addition to maintaining a busy practice, he served on Medical Staff Leadership at Lincoln General Hospital and Bryan Medical Center.

Tim loved his family more than anything, including his wife Brenda and each of his children Seth and Mindee and later welcomed Brenda’s children Joey and Melissa as his own. He enjoyed sharing his hobbies and interests with his family, especially his passion for baseball. Tim’s love of baseball was sparked early in his life by his dad. He enjoyed watching his son Seth play baseball and daughter Mindee play softball and could frequently be found either attending, watching or listening to a game. He lit up as he talked about how his kids (and later grandkids) played in a recent game. It was evident that one of his favorite things was being a grandpa. He and Brenda recently talked about the strengths and what they thought the future would hold for each of their 11 grandchildren. Each grandchild loved visiting Papa and hearing his latest story.

Tim loved being with his family and friends. Whether it was enjoying a delicious meal he prepared, playing a round of golf (which he liked to try to get in at least one round every month of the year) or making an annual ski trip, it didn’t matter as he was happy to be around those he loved. He particularly enjoyed visiting and vacationing with his twin brother Tom as well as an almost annual trip to Laughlin, Nevada with Brenda and her siblings.

Throughout the years, Tim enjoyed opportunities to serve others. He volunteered in the medical tent at the Lincoln Marathon for years stating he “always made the finish line for the Marathon”. He was honored to serve as a medical guardian for 6 veteran honor flights assisting veterans from WWII, Korean War, Vietnam & Purple Heart Veterans and Gold Star Kids as they were able to take one day trips to Washington DC to see the memorials.

He began volunteering at Strategic Air and Space Museum shortly after his retirement providing public tours. This was a perfect fit for him as he was able to share his wealth of knowledge with others.

In his retirement, Tim also helped on the family farm in Friend, NE and couldn’t be more excited when it came to spring planting and fall harvest.

Tim enjoyed the acreage where he and Brenda lived.  They put a lot of sweat equity into it but enjoyed nothing more than sitting on the deck, listening to music and looking out on their own piece of paradise.

Family – Tim is survived by his wife Brenda Lieske, children Seth (Jillion) Lieske of Raymond, NE, Mindee (Nate) Dorske of Santaquin, Utah, Joey (Jaime) Carder, Pleasant Dale, NE and Melissa (Adam) Pleas of Omaha, NE. Grandchildren Parker and Rylee Lieske; Jackson, Reed, and Elinor Dorske; Kallie, Kolton, and Kyson Carder; Hadley (Mattley), Briggston, and Lennan Pleas. Brother Tom (Mary) Lieske of Minden, NE, Mother-in-Law Janice Vinderslev of Friend, NE, Brothers in Law Ray (Mindy) Rohrig, Gary Rohrig, Sister-in-law Dianna (Bill) Groenke and many nieces and nephews.  Also, very special friends Dennis and Sue Connolly, Bill and Laurie Dicke, and Greg and Cassidy Bohac.

Oh my, I just learned of Tims passing. He and I were both pulmonary fellows at the University of Missouri 1982-84. We lived in the same neighborhood and rode to the hospital together every day for 2 years. We shared many, many wonderful times together. Rest in peace my friend. Having been a part of the Honor Flights as a Medic I was able to be part of an amazing team of medical volunteers. It was not only an honor to do these flights but to work with such dedicated professionals as Dr. Lieske and his wife Brenda. I am saddened to learn of his passing, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was truly “One of a Kind”!

Dr. Lieske was a caring and compassionate physician. He had respect from nursing, RT, and physicians. He was a leader in developing Sleep Medicine in the community and he leaves a legacy that continues to carry on. So sorry for your loss.

Dr. Lieske and I were rounding on pt in 405 …at Bryan East. We went in and the patient had the tv on. The twin towers had just been attached and the 2 of us stood there one on each side of the patients bed and along with the patient watched it come crashing down. We watched the chaos, all of us in silence … we stood for a good long time. Not realizing Dr. Lieske and the patient had both been in the service they both looked at one another and said almost at the same time “ I guess this means war”. He examined the pt and we walked out… we were at the cubby standing there as he wrote his progress note; he said- Julie are you ok? (I was in shock) I told him my brother Matt was in NYC… his response was “your only job today is to call him and make sure he’s ok”… he called me later that shift to see if I had gotten a hold of him… a moment in time I will never forget. 9/11. He asked me how my brother was multiple times in those following days. I will never forget his kindness towards me. Dr. Lieske was a good man. He took great care for his patients. He appreciated nurses and how we took care of them. May he rest easy now. Positive thoughts to Brenda and all the kids for the days ahead.

I had the privilege of seeing/ working with Dr. Lieske as a floor nurse at Bryan Memorial Hospital 40 years ago. He was respectful to not only his patients, but also the nurses caring for them. Keeping all of you in prayer.
