Obituary

Dr. Elaine Marie Kruse

November 11, 1940 - November 27, 2025

Dr. Elaine Marie Kruse, November 11, 1940 – November 27, 2025, age 85, of Lincoln, Nebraska has taken her final flight home to heaven.

Elaine was a brilliant, fun, and accomplished woman ahead of her time. Born in Oak Park, Illinois to the late Natalie and Wilfred Kruse, Elaine was one of 4 girls. Her entire life, she enjoyed spending as much time as possible at Lake James with her family swimming the buoys and greeting cousins and extended family.

Elaine was an accomplished academic and continued to be curious her entire retirement. She attended Grace River Forest (class of ‘54)and Walther High School (class of ‘58) and Augustana College(class of ‘62) studying French. While working on her Masters in History at the University of Illinois Champaign (1962 – 1964), she also gave birth to her daughters Dawn and Diane. She earned her PhD in History from the University of Iowa(class of ‘83). After several instructorships, Elaine found her home as a Professor of History at Nebraska Wesleyan and held many leadership positions including President of the Faculty. She held her students and colleagues in high esteem and loved them like family. Elaine was a true feminist, finding ways to bring women’s stories and roles to light in all her syllabi, papers, and talks.

An avid traveler, Elaine first studied abroad in Paris as an undergrad and returned for each of her year long sabbaticals. She was happy to share her flat with visiting friends and family, and always joined for tea and a tour of Musee D’Orsay. When not traveling with family, Elaine had the best of times with friends. She was a voracious reader, lover of chocolate, continuous cat guardian, and incessant tennis fan.

Elaine was a lifelong proud Lutheran and humanitarian. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, and found a faith community everywhere she spent time where she would make and maintain deep connections. Hostess with the mostess- entertained others with ease and pleasure, whether for meals or stays of long or short duration. She enjoyed gifting books to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and in her latest chapter was especially fond of watching them swim.

While Elaine’s passing is sudden, it was peaceful and she said regularly her life was full and she felt cheated of nothing. Elaine joins her parents, grandson Brad, and granddaughters Olivia and Penlope in heaven. Those left to honor her legacy include her sisters Margaret Kruse, Kathy (Gene) Neer, Roberta (Mike) Gillespie; daughters Dawn Kuehn and Diane (Kevin) Wild; grandchildren Nicole (Rusty) Robb, Cory (Monica) Capper, Christopher (Chelsea) Capper, Bridget (Benjamin Kornfeld) Wild; great grandchildren Haylie, Kayla, Eleanor, Louella, Nolan, Frederick, Theodore, Michael, Mabel, Kirby, Mackenzie, Lydia and Mia; her nieces and nephews and numerous extended relatives. Elaine’s body will be cremated and interred with her parents in Illinois. The family plans to hold celebrations of life in Oak Park, Illinois at a later date.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 6th at First Lutheran Church 1551 S 70th Street Lincoln, Nebraska. The funeral will be held at 11 am.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to Nebraska Wesleyan University, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, or Augustana College.

Dr. Kruse was possibly the first feminist I met as a sophomore at NWU. She brought life to history and I will always remember our class role playing adventures of the French Revolution. What a time we had! I am grateful to have crossed paths with her at Augustana College’s homecoming in 2022. I work there and recognized her immediately at the street carnival. What a pleasure it was to see her after so many years. Rest in peace, Dr. Kruse. You changed many lives!

Elaine = lively, laughter, leadership, loving, Lutheran When we were both Faculty, Elaine was my shining star and role model. I so admired her ability to work under-cover, in meeting with each potential woman faculty candidate who came to Wesleyan. Her efforts were very significant in raising the percentage of women from 19% (~ 1975) to closer to 50 %.

Dr. Kruse was my advisor and one of my favorite professors at Nebraska Wesleyan. She made a huge impact on my life and development during a turbulent time. She always found new ways to encourage me to be a lifelong learner. She also instilled in me an interest in French Revolutionary history and even talked me into some of her more challenging courses. She was tough and unafraid to test her students. She made us all better whether we understood it or not. I graduated in 2005 and still think about our conversations and miss the rigors of those years at Wesleyan. Au revoir, Dr. Kruse. God spede you.

I always enjoyed Elaine when she came in to or called our office. She had a zest for life and a cute sense of humor. My daughter attended Augustana like she had years ago and my husband works at Wesleyan like she did. She was right about going to the Musee D’orsay and I appreciated her recommendation when we were in Paris. I will miss her sense of humor and her calls very much.

Elaine was a member of Torch Club and I always enjoyed her company. She had a wonderful relationship with her students and I admired that as I admired her.

I was not a history major, but a friend convinced Dr. Kruse to let me take her 200-level French Revolution class. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun and I believe I won her over by trying hard. Years after, Dr. Kruse would continue to send me notes of encouragement if she read one of my stories in the newspaper. One time, in response to a story I wrote about a local history, she bestowed upon me the title “historian” which gave me a lot of pride. Dr. Kruse was a great teacher and person and will be missed by many.

Dr. Kruse was a key part of why I decided to declare a history major! Although she retired partway through my time at Wesleyan, she remained generous of her time and even welcomed me to stay with her family at the lake house while I was on a cross-country trip. She will be missed!
