Dorothy (“Dotty”) Askey Forke Kingery, 91, Lincoln, passed away peacefully from this life Wednesday, October 5, 2011. Dorothy was born in Norfolk, Nebraska, on April 11, 1920, to Dr. Hollis A. and Mabel L. (Fuesler) Askey. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938 and the University of Nebraska in 1942, with a degree in English and Speech. She married Avery Forke on June 7, 1942 and they spent 31 years together until his death in 1973. On July 17, 1983, she and Orville Kingery were married and they spent 25 years together also enjoying their extended families and friends.
Dorothy was a 60+ year member of the following organizations: Alpha Phi Sorority, P.E.O. Chapter BR, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 307, Daughters of the Nile-Naphis Temple 66, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Junior League of Lincoln and the American Red Cross where she served as director of volunteers in the 1950’s. Dorothy was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association, a Trustee of the University of Nebraska Foundation, the Giving Society and the Chancellor’s Club. She was a benefactor of the Lincoln Community Foundation and made it possible for her father, Dr. Hollis Askey and first husband, Avery Forke to become sustaining members.
Dorothy enjoyed being with family and friends, entertaining in her home, playing bridge and Rummikub. She was always there to lend a helping hand with her friends in times of sickness and sorrow, and enjoyed taking flowers and gifts to brighten their day. She traveled extensively in all 50 of the United States and also visited Hong Kong, China, and many countries in Europe, including a hot air balloon trip through France with daughter Jeanie in 1999.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jeanie (Forke) Imler and son-in-law Earl of Lincoln; granddaughter Michelle (Trusdale) Johnson and husband Nathan of Lincoln; great grandson Avery Johnson of Lincoln; stepson Chris Kingery and wife Mary of Lincoln; step-grandson David Kingery of Addison, TX; step-granddaughter Ginny and husband Dan Briggs of McKinney, TX, step-great-grandchildren Ryan and Lauren Briggs of McKinney, TX; stepson Bill Kingery and wife Phyllis of Lincoln; step-grandsons Michael Kingery and wife Amy of Omaha; and Sam Kingery of Lincoln; and stepdaughter Andy Kingery of Derwood, MD.
Other survivors include a brother, Bob Askey and wife Jacqueline of Longmont, CO; nephew David Askey and wife Jenny of Boulder, CO; great-niece Emily Askey and great nephew Zachary Askey of Boulder, CO.; nephew Steven Askey and wife Jeanneane of Cheyenne, WY., godchild Nan (Dunker) Mundell of Lincoln and many other friends and relatives. Dorothy was preceded in death by parents, Dr. Hollis and Mabel Askey, husband Avery Forke (1973) and husband Orville Kingery (2008).
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday (10-10-11) Roper and Sons Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ Street. Rev. Dr. Andrew L. McDonald, officiating. Private prior interment.
Visitation: 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday with family greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., funeral home.
