Doris was born April 2, 1933, in Lincoln, NE to Clarence and Marian (Cooley) Althouse. Her family lived near Waverly, where she grew up with her sister and two brothers. She attended Waverly High School, graduating in 1951. While in school, she played the cello in band and was on the volleyball team.
In 1952, she married Eugene Maahs. Together, they worked the family farm in Walton and raised six children.
Doris worked as a postal carrier for the Waverly Post Office for over 28 years. She began her career as a substitute rural route carrier before getting a permanent route in the city of Waverly.
Doris was a devout Lutheran throughout her life. She served as both a Sunday School and Midweek teacher and played the organ at church. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Eagle Immanuel Church. While raising her own family, they attended Trinity Lutheran in Walton. Later, Peace Lutheran in Waverly became her home church, where she was a faithful member for over 40 years.
Second only to her faith, was her family. Doris shared her unconditional love with each member of her family and was always there to show her support.
Doris had many hobbies. In addition to her daily devotions, she spent her time sewing and quilting. Many were blessed with her quilts throughout the years. In the kitchen, she made her award-winning apple pie and her family’s favorite potato salad (in the yellow bowl). She was a huge Husker fan. She rarely missed watching a Husker sporting event; she was a football season ticket holder for a number of years.
During her life, Doris was active in many organizations, such as: Ladies Aide/LWML, Extension Club, school PTA, Lunch Bunch, Grandmother’s Quilters Group, 4-H, and various bible study and card groups. She volunteered on the election committee for many years and she was a multi-gallon blood donor at the Community Blood Bank.
