David H. Mickey

David H. Mickey, 98, of Lincoln, passed away May 15, 2016. Born January 7, 1918 in Wood Lake, NE to Benjamin H. and Mary (Hanna) Mickey. WWII U. S. Army Veteran, 1st Lt. served in England and France. Graduate of Wood Lake H.S. 1935, Nebraska Wesleyan University (B.A.) 1939, UNL (M.A) 1942 (Ph.D) 1954. Honorary Doctorate of Letters 2012, Nebraska Wesleyan University.

His memberships include: First United Methodist Church since 1951, past chairman of the board, choir member, North Star Lodge #227 A.F. & A.M. 71+ year member where he was awarded the Bronze Jordan Medal, Myrtle Chapter #94, O.E.S. past patron, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) 40+ year member, active member of the Nebraska State Historical Society, and Cherry County Historical Society.

David was a member of the Crescent fraternity (Zeta Psi) and faculty advisor for the fraternity at Nebraska Wesleyan University as well as faculty advisor for the Blue Key Honor Society. He was also a member of the Sunflowers Group at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
David authored “Sunset on the Prairie”, a biography of D. W. Huntington the first chancellor at Nebraska Wesleyan University followed by the first hundred years history of Nebraska Wesleyan titled “Of Sunflowers, Coyotes and Plainsmen”.

David taught at Garden County High School in Oshkosh, NE from 1939-1941, Peru State College 1948-1951, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Chairman of the History Department 1951-1983, Professor Emeritus of History 1987.

Survived by his daughter, Pamela B. Witham (Randy Leach); son, Timothy D. (Diane) Mickey, all of Lincoln; grandchildren, Cory (Mandy) Mason, Omaha, Jennifer (Nicholas) Louderback, Lincoln, Kristen Witham, Lincoln, Benjamin, Jill and Jacob Mickey, all of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Hanna and Tobin Louderback, Lincoln; niece, Susan Edwards, Phoenix, AZ and other family members and friends. Preceded in death by parents, wife, Miriam (1964), sister, Mary (Don) Edwards, grandparents including John H. Mickey, Nebraska Governor 1903-1905.

Life Celebration Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday (5-20-16) First United Methodist Church, 50th & St. Paul Ave. with Pastor Larry Moffet officiating.
