Constance Lee “Connie” Barksdale

February 25, 1952 - August 18, 2025

Constance Lee “Connie” Barksdale, age 73, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on August 18, 2025. She suffered a heart attack followed by four days in the intensive care unit, before succumbing to her illness at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Born in Lincoln on February 25, 1952, to Donald and Jacqueline Lincoln, Connie lived a life defined by compassion, energy, and service. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1970, earned her nursing diploma from Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing in 1973, and completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1979.

Connie’s dedication to healthcare began early as a Candy Striper in high school and continued for 45 years as a registered nurse. For more than three decades, she served as a nurse in the emergency department at Lincoln General/Bryan West, where her skill, strength, and empathy made a lasting impact on patients, colleagues, and the community.

Connie married her husband, Larry Barksdale, on August 19, 1972. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

She is survived by Larry, their sons Aaron N. Barksdale (Jill) and Nick A. Barksdale (Joi), grandchildren Bryce and Jase, and step-grandchildren Audree, Austin (Elli), and Avery.

Connie was a high-energy spirit who embraced life with joy and determination. She was an avid softball player, mini-marathon competitor, golfer, pickleball enthusiast, and a Grand Master in bridge. She loved traveling, nurturing friendships, and creating a vibrant, loving home. Her warmth, humor, and generosity were constants in the lives of those who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Roper and Sons South Chapel (3950 Hohensee Dr. Lincoln, NE 68516). A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Nebraska Public Media Foundation – organizations that reflect Connie’s lifelong commitment to care, advocacy, and education.

Her legacy lives on in the lives she healed, the family she cherished, and the joy she brought to every room she entered.

Larry, Aaron, & Nick, I am so sorry to hear about Connie’s death. I have not seen her for many years but have so many great memories of our commuting to Omaha to UNMC with Dee Ristine Hibbs. At the time it didn’t seem like fun, but her great sense of humor and stories about little Aaron made it much more bearable. I am sorry that I won’t be able to make it to the service as I am out of town until mid;September. I will always have fond memories of her.

Barksdale family, Phyllis Behrens , Connie and I became good buddies as Lincoln residents driving very early mornings from Lincoln to University campus to work on our BSN in 1977 or1978. We each had multiple years of Nursing experience so classes were not always challenging and a joke, since we could have been the unit instructors. We didn’t let anyone know our age until the end, joining in when possible to group activities. It was a chore to get up so early after working evening shift at our jobs. We drove together, one designated driver so the other two could sleep or cram for a test or presentation. Of course after class we would have to hustle back to Lincoln to clean up to go to work. We had many laughs, struggles to find parking on those Nebraska hills. I remember once in my VE Rabbit, going front and back to squeeze into a parking space leaving maybe 4-5 inches front and back. Reading all about Connie’s amazing life, she continued to be the amazing woman I knew. My Condolences to each of you.

Dear Connie’s Family — I teach the Step classes that Connie has been coming to at Genesis Racquet Club for many years. She has been such a wonderful friend to all of us. She is an original “Sunday Stepper” and even had her own spot. This past Sunday, we stepped in honor of Connie. She will be missed by her gym family.

Sorry for your families loss. I remember Nick inviting me to a Halloween party she had set up at your house when we were kids and the haunted maze she made in the basement. Our thoughts are with your family.

Larry & Family, we are sorry to hear of Connie’s passing. I remember many times working with her at the ER. You children should be very proud of the many years your mom and dad for the many years they have given to the public in Lincoln

I played Bridge withConnie for 40 years. Her sons were little boys when I used to play at her house. And now I see her at duplicate. I don’t know her family and they don’t know me. I want you to know that I will miss her too.

Larry, Aaron and Nick, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. There were a lot of good times, too many to list but the IAATI adventures and frequent visits at the LGH-ER were the most memorable. Stay strong the sorrow will ease in time and you have a perfect angel looking out for you.
