Carol Ann Rouse

April 22, 1948 - November 30, 2022

Carol Ann Rouse passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the Eastmont facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. Carol was born April 22, 1948, the second child of six children born to Raymond and Carolyn Rouse.

Carol grew up in Hickman and Holmesville. She graduated from Holmesville High School in 1966.

After high school graduation Carol wanted to attend business school in Omaha, NE, but her parents weren’t happy about her moving to the “big city”. She was instead attended the Grand Island School of Business. After graduation Carol took and passed the Civil Service Tests. She was offered an admin position at The Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and accepted the job in this much larger city. Thus began her 36-year career in Civil Service. She transferred to SAC Headquarters in Omaha, then to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. In continuing her education, Carol received her bachelor’s degree in library science. She retired in 2003 and in 2015 moved back to Nebraska to be closer to her family.

Carol loved quilting. Her mother assisted her in sewing her first quilt in 1970 and the love became a passion. After that, in every city she lived she would join at least one quilting guild. In her quilting career she made well over 100 quilts and was so proficient she entered and won many awards and recognitions. At one point she restored a badly damaged 100+ year old quilt and was adamant about the choice of fabrics for this task. The result was phenomenal, and the quilt was presented as a family gift.

A quilter’s heart is wrapped in bits of fabric and thread. Once sewn together and quilted, a work of art is created. Then the quilter’s heart can be at rest . . . at least for a few hours until the next square of fabric calls out to them for the same loving treatment. Carol loved sharing her passion with fellow experts and budding novices. The joy was in the process. Carol’s affection for fabric resulted in many more yards of material than she could ever hope to use. In her later years she made many donations to fellow quilters. One group in Colorado has international connections resulting in Carol’s influence being felt worldwide and we are all better for having known and embraced Carol and her passion.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Carolyn (Shambaugh) Rouse, and brother Terry.

Survived by siblings Allen (& Laurie) Rouse, Don (& Joan) Rouse, Chuck (& Bonnie) Rouse, and Sue Rouse (& Al) Saathoff; sister-in-law Kathi Rouse; nieces Sandi Rouse, Tracy Rouse (& Mike) Wesley, Jennifer (Rouse) Bale, and Taylor (Rouse) Stenneche; great-nephews Sheldon Bale and Paxton Stenneche, and great-nieces Cassie Bale, Paige Stenneche, and Sydney Wesley.

A ”Celebration of Life” service will be held on Tuesday, December 27th, at 11:00 am at Roper & Sons Midtown Chapel, 4300 ‘O’ St in Lincoln, NE. Lunch will be served on site after the service.

Memorial contributions will be made to the International Quilt Museum in memory of Carol Rouse at 1523 N 33rd St Lincoln, NE 68583.

I met Carol in San Antonio when I worked for Electronic Security Command at Lackland AFB, TX. She was in the Federally Employed Women (FEW) organization which she served a President, Vice President and may leadership positions. She helped organize our local, regional and national training programs each year. We soon became friends and I began my quilting assistance job with Carol when she made a quilt for me. She also made Christmas raffle gifts for FEW to raffle at our parties. They were always a hit and everyone wanted Carol’s quilting gifts. She made me a lap quilt that was our first one together and everyday I cuddle with it. I told her I wanted to say “I helped.” So she had me sew the pieces together. So I sat at the table matching fabric pieces. She asked me “what I was doing?” “I am matching the pieces, very difficult.” Carol said “” we don’t match fabric in quilting.” OH! Carol was extremely gifted in her skill of quilt making. If you look at her quilts you can see that her fabrics were carefully chosen for each quilt. Her designs were not simple, but at times complex and demanding and a great deal of planning was put into each quilt. I learned a lot about quilting from Carol. I know she told me that she won several first place awards for her quilts. I remember an all white quilt she had in a show – it was beautiful. She made me a “911” plague quilt with the pentagon and eagle and the pieces of fabric she chose was incredible to complete it. I found this quilt magazine one day and showed it to Carol and asked her if she would make the quilt on the cover. We went to a quilt shop and can you believe the actual fabric on the cover of the magazine was there. I immediately purchased it and off Carol went to make my quilt. It looks like Christmas, but if you look closer, it is green leaves with red flowers. Another beautiful quilt. I wish I could have been there today to celebrate Carol’s life, to meet her family and friends, and shared with everyone her quilts she made for me. I am blessed to have her friendship. She truly had a passion and joy in making each quilt for that special person. Carol rest in peace and you will always be a part of my life.

I have fond memories of your family while in Hickman. Terry was in my class and just a great guy. Carol and Allen ahead and Donny a year behind. Schoolyard and Scout memories. Quite the artist, Carol. I’m not surprised. Saddened by your loss but warmed by such childhood memories.

Thanks to Carol and her family for the generous donations of quilts, quilt tops, and fabrics to Lincoln Quilters Guild Cuddle Quilts, the Asian Community & Cultural Center, Echo Collective, and for Afghan refugees. Carol was a valued member of Lincoln Quilters Guild and the Blue Valley Quilt Guild of Seward. Her workmanship in her quiltmaking was admired by all. Our sincere condolences to her family and friends.
