Bowen Eacritt Taylor

February 18, 1919 - May 14, 2011

Bowen Eacritt Taylor M.D., F.A.C.P., M.D., F.A.C.P., 92, Lincoln, died Saturday (5-14-11). Born in Scottsbluff.

He completed his high school education in Lincoln and his undergraduate degree, B.A. at this University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His M.D. degree was earned from University of Nebraska Medical School during World War II. He completed an Internship at the same institution, and he then served two years in the U.S. Army until 1946. After nine months of general practice in West Point, Neb., Dr. Taylor spent four years at the Mayo Clinic. He received his Master of Science in Medicine in 1950, from the University of Minnesota. After completing specialty training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, he returned to Lincoln to associate with the Lincoln Clinic in full-time practice of Internal Medicine and Cardiology until 1991. In the years immediately following retirement, Dr. Taylor returned intermittently to part-time affiliation with the Lincoln Clinic when his services were needed.

During these many years of service to the medical needs of Lincoln and its environs, Dr. Taylor maintained a teaching position at University of Nebraska’s College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine. His hospital practice was predominately at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, where he with others, were instrumental in establishing the first Coronary Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit in this area in the l960’s. He served that hospital as Chief of Staff in l975 and 1976 and was on the Board of Trustees from 1973-1979.

Dr. Taylor’s other contributions to the field of medicine included teaching nurses, students, and physicians through the Bryan School of Nursing, the Internship programs at Bryan Memorial Hospital, and the Lincoln Medical Education Foundation Residency Program. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, 1962-1965. He also served the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians as Governor in l980-l984 and received Nebraska Laureate Award as outstanding loyalty member of the American College of Physicians in 1991.

Dr. Taylor also served as past member of the 20 club, Executive Club, and the Doctor’s Mayo Society. He was a member of Evaluation Committee of Harris Laboratories. His fraternal organizations included Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Rho. He served Westminster Presbyterian Church as an elder. He also enjoyed relaxation through gardening, fishing, hunting and photography as well as time in the mountains of Colorado.

On top of the demands of his chosen profession, Dr. Taylor has a large family and is survived by his wife of 70 years, Caroline. Together they had six children: Sons and Daughters-in-law: John and Sherry Taylor, Nevada, Mo., Dr. Bruce and Debra Taylor, Lincoln, Steve and Jo Taylor, Lincoln, Scott and Jodi Taylor, Inman, Kan.; Daughter and Son-in-law: Dr Nancy and Tom Hicks, Omaha; Son-in-law: Steve and Christine Wagner, Tijerus, N.M. They have 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Dr. Taylor was preceded in death by an “angel” Daughter, Jean Marie Wagner, his parents and three brothers.

The Celebration of Dr. Taylor’s life will be Friday, May 20, at 3 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in the main sanctuary.
