Allegra B. Penington

September 16, 1944 - July 5, 2025

Allegra Belle Penington, 80, of Lincoln, passed away July 5, 2025. Allegra was born September 16, 1944 in Gothenburg, NE to Chester and Ruby (Stephenson) Smith.

Allegra graduated with distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she was a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Alpha Lamba Delta, and Pi Lamba Theta Honoraries. She served as Vice President of Sigma Alpha Iota Professional Music Fraternity and was a Countess in the 1967 Ak-Sar-Ben Coronation Ball. Married on June 30, 1972, she and her husband Chuck were a true love story and musical team for the ages. Allegra and Chuck worked together to start his music production company, PANDA Productions, and they also performed together as the featured musical talent with Chuck on piano and Allegra playing electric bass on Lincoln channel 10/11’s Morning Show with Leta Powell Drake. She played for countless prestigious events such as the Ak-Sar-Ben Coronation Ball, Miss Nebraska Pageant, the Omaha Addys Awards, Metro Omaha Medical Society’s M.E.S.S. Club musical parody showcase, numerous musical theater productions, studio recordings, as well as private and corporate engagements both locally and beyond with such notables as Quincy Jones, Patti Austin, David Foster, and Nathan East, and Victor Lewis, just to name a few. In 2006, she was awarded the honorary distinction of Admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.

For 30 years, Allegra taught vocal music, first at Brownell Elementary and then at Meadow Lane Elementary in Lincoln. Allegra’s exemplary teaching was evident in every school concert she produced with meticulous attention to preparedness, performance, and presentation in showcasing all of her students. Her Chorus students were often requested to perform the National Anthem at events at the State Capitol and at Lincoln Saltdogs baseball games. She was a two-time recipient of the Time Warner Cable national teachers award for which she was recognized in Washington, D.C. In addition, she taught private lessons on piano and electric bass out of her home for many years. Above all, she loved and was most proud of her beautiful family: her daughter Ashley Penington Tarter (Andre’), Lincoln; son Logan (Amy) Penington, Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren Aurora & Ariel Tarter and Jameson Penington; brother Malcolm Smith, Ainsworth, NE. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles (Chuck), and sister Terry Trego.

Allegra and I were part of the specialists team at both Brownell and Meadow Lane. One of my favorite memories was dressing up as The Three Musketeers for a special spirit day at Brownell with Allegra and Jill Hitz. Allegra braved a snowstorm to rent the elaborate and fancy costumes from Fringe and Tassel. It was a very fun and Allegra-esque moment. I also enjoyed eating lunch together in our last years at Meadow Lane. I admired her intelligence, wit and excellent sense of humor. We laughed a lot! Rest in peace, Allegra.

I loved being part of the amazing Medical Mess Club! Allegra, Chuck, Ashley and Logan are so musically gifted and so much fun! Allegra was a beautiful soul. I sing in my church’s praise choir now because of the confidence I gained being part of the Medical Mess Club. Prayers for Ashley and Logan and family, Dr. Jill Reel

She was my music teacher at Brownell. She was always so colorful, and full of spirit and structure. She knew how to put on a show for our parents to look back and cherish. I remember thinking she was the coolest adult I ever met. Even when she was correcting me for coming in late or not doing the right choreography. She taught me structure and the importance of art and expressing your inner light. Her inner light will forever shine with all the lives she touched.

I am so proud to have worked alongside Allegra Penington. The Meadow Lane school song, written by Chuck and Allegra, was probably the best school song I ever heard. I was kind of proud of my Maxey School Song, but the Meadow Lane song takes the cake! When I first came to Nebraska, I watched Allegra and Chuck and Leta on the Morning Show. Allegra and I used to reminisce about those old days when we worked together at M.L. School. Allegra was a good and faithful servant. Job well done, my friend. Sylvia
