She attended all 12 years of school in Uehling and graduated from Uehling High School in 1949 – the first class to graduate at the auditorium. She married Stanley Sass on September 29, 1951.
Twila lived in Minden and Hastings, while Stanley worked for the newspaper there. They moved to Fremont, NE and Twila worked at Miller Pharmacy as their buyer for Hallmark products. Twila’s mother was a seamstress so her interest in sewing, crocheting, and knitting started at age 8. Her interest in quilting started when she joined Prairie Piecemakers as a charter member in March 1982. She took many classes from well-known quilters and produced many of them over the years. For 40 years Twila and her sister, Peg, had annual boutiques in Fremont and Grand Island, sharing their crafts with many people. Twila was also an active member in the Lincoln and Greater Omaha Iris Societies and First Lutheran Church in Fremont. She volunteered her time at the Louis E. May Museum, Meals-On-Wheels, and the Blood Bank.
Twila is survived by her daughter Sally Thomsen and husband, Dave of Lincoln, grandchildren Scott Thomsen, wife Elizabeth and Sarah Thomsen of Lincoln, great-grandsons Logan and Dean Thomsen of Lincoln, sister-in-law Bonnie Larson, several nieces, and nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband Stanley, sister Peggy (Robert) Templin, brother Merrill “Skinny” Larson, in-laws Ted (Jean) Sass, Cecelia Risinger, and Edith (Jim) O’Malley.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:30 pm Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at First Lutheran Church, 3200 E. Military, Fremont. Inurnment in the Memorial Cemetery, Fremont.
