What does it mean to be a hero? For most of us, the word “hero” conjures images of extraordinary acts—of people who run toward danger, risk their lives, or achieve something monumental. Heroism can often show up quietly, woven into the everyday moments that hold communities together. It’s the person who steps in when help is needed, who listens without judgment, who gives time, strength, and compassion without expecting anything in return. These are the everyday heroes among us, and each year, Roper & Sons honors them through our annual Here’s To The Heroes Award, recognizing local individuals who embody courage, service, and kindness in remarkable ways.
2025 Hero Winner
Jamie Granquist is one of those people who makes a lasting difference simply by being who she is. In her role with Lincoln Parks and Recreation, Jamie is known for her tireless support of small business owners and event organizers as they navigate the process of reserving and using city parks. She’s the go-to person who makes things happen—calmly, kindly, and efficiently. Those who know her describe her patience as unmatched and her positivity as contagious.
But what truly defines Jamie is not just her professionalism—it’s her heart. In 2020, after witnessing a car accident, she didn’t hesitate to jump into action, helping save the life of a man named Tom. Beyond that moment, Jamie continued to support Tom and his family throughout his recovery, offering friendship and strength when they needed it most. Jamie doesn’t seek recognition; she simply shows up, with compassion and unwavering care. She is a true example of what it means to lead with love and live as a quiet force for good.
2025 Honorees
Roper & Sons also recognized two Hero Honorees whose stories exemplify selflessness and dedication.
David Bonifant is another shining example of everyday heroism. A U.S. Marine who served multiple tours, including during 9/11 at Ground Zero, David continues to live a life of protection, service, and compassion. In his civilian career, he’s known for his incredible work ethic, positivity, and willingness to learn anything needed to help his team. Whether he’s helping diffuse tense situations, driving family members to appointments, caring for animals, or bringing joy to a child’s birthday party, David approaches everything with humility, humor, and heart. His life reminds us that true heroism is found in daily acts of kindness and the steadfast choice to help others.
Josh Leichleiter, a Navy veteran, has built his life around service—both in uniform and in everyday life. Twice, his quick thinking and calm under pressure saved lives. Once, when a man began choking in public, Josh immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver and saved him. Another time, he jumped into action to help a young girl whose bike accident caused a severe leg injury, using his training to stop the bleeding and keep her alive until help arrived. Josh doesn’t see himself as a hero, but his instinct to serve, protect, and care for others defines exactly what a hero is.
Since 2022, Roper & Sons has been shining a spotlight on individuals like Jamie, David, and Josh to remind us that heroes walk among us—in workplaces, neighborhoods, and everyday moments. They may not wear uniforms or receive medals, but their actions make our community stronger and more compassionate.
As we honor and celebrate these remarkable individuals, take a moment to notice the countless quiet acts of kindness happening around us every day. Gratitude is powerful, and when you see someone lending a hand, offering comfort, or making a difference, thank them. In doing so, we honor their selflessness and help inspire more of it in the world around us.
