Harry G. Peckham, 101, Lincoln, died Monday, March 7. He was born May 8, 1909 in Palmyra, to George Eben and Minnie (Wall) Peckham on a farm 1 1/2 miles east of Palmyra. Peckham attended Grandview District 85 in Otoe County and then moved west of town and went to Palmyra town school. The family moved to Eagle in 1924 where he attended Eagle High School. He farmed with his father and helped raise his younger sisters. In 1946 he moved three miles west of Waverly and continued farming until the sale of the farm in 1950. He started working at Goodyear in August of 1950 and worked there for 24 years as a machine operator and serviceman.
He met his wife, Gladys in the 1930’s at Prairie Home Church thanks to Bob Otley. They were married on Dec. 28, 1977. The groom was 68 and the bride was 63. It was the first marriage for both of them. He loved riding horses, baseball especially the college world series, and traveling. He had been in all 50 states, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The Peckhams enjoyed many trips together before her death in 2009.
Peckham was a member of the Prairie Home United Methodist Church and United Rubbers Workers Union #286.
Gladys, his parents, and his sisters, Hazel Myers, Edna Anderson, Mary Ringland, Lucille Cash Ringland, Sara Conditt, and Velma Jacobsen preceded him in death. Three sisters, Beulah Lawson of Stephenville, Texas, Lois Houser and Irene Provost, both of Lincoln, and nieces and nephews, survive him.
Celebration of Life Service was held Thursday, March 10 at Roper and Sons with burial at Rosehill Cemetery in Waverly.
