Robert G. Fuller, 76, Lincoln, died on Monday evening, April 9, 2012, as a result of complications from a severe brain aneurysm experienced on Thanksgiving morning. His enthusiasm for life and new ideas and his love of chocolate, raspberries, and conversation will be deeply missed.
Born June 7, 1935 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Harold Q and Charlotte Mae (Gohl) Fuller. Bob graduated from Rolla High School, Rolla, MO. Received his BS degree in Physics from the then Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and his M.S. and Ph. D. in Physics from University of Illinois. He was the Science Master at Methodist English High School in Rangoon, Burma (1958-61) where he taught Aung San Suu Kyi. From 1969-2005 he was Professor of Physics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During those years he took leave from UNL to serve as a Visiting Professor at The Open University, Milton Keynes, England ; a Distinguished Visiting Professor, U. S. Air Force Academy ; a Visiting Scholar, Univ. of California, Berkeley and a Visiting Professor, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY.
He was an active member of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and was the founder of the ADAPT Program at UNL. He was an outstanding Professor receiving awards for his teaching including: Distinguished Teaching Awards, UNL, 1973 and 1986; Insight magazine’s, ‘one of the 10 best college professors in America’, March 11, 1987; Robert A. Millikan Medal for outstanding contributions to the teaching of physics, AAPT, 1992; Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award (OTICA), University of Nebraska, April, 1993; Member, Academy of Distinguished Teachers, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1995-present; and The ‘Doc Elliott ‘ Award from the UN-L Alumni Association, 2011.
He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church.
Family members include wife of 50 years, Margaret Fuller; daughter: Amy Fuller and husband Frank Wilson and their children, Joe and David, all of Portland, OR; daughter: Laurie Fuller and partner Erica Meiners, Chicago, IL; son: Andrew Fuller and partner Maro Sevastopoulos, Portland, OR; Air Force Cadet daughter and family: Chiquita O’Cain and husband Bruce and their children, Joshua, Caleb and Jonluke, Great Falls, VA; brothers, sisters-in-law: Richard M. and Judith Fuller, Falcon Heights, MN; Harry and Kate Fuller, Ashland, OR.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First United Methodist Church on May 26th, 2012.
