Obituary

Marilyn Jensen

June 7, 1947 - November 14, 2025

Marilyn ‘Mare” Jensen, 78, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Marilyn will be remembered for her radiant smile, dry wit, and fearless dedication to her family and community.

Born on June 7, 1947, Sidney, Nebraska, Marilyn was the daughter of Neil and Janet Garrde Atkins and sister to Thomas (Elizabeth) Atkins and the late Carolyn (Jim) Ruck. From an early age, she displayed leaderish and enthusiasm that carried throughout her life. At Sidney High School, she served as vice-president of the Sub-Debs, secretary of FTA, majorette of the Sidney High Band, vice-president of GAA, third messenger in Job’s Daughters, and active member of the Pep Club and Sidney Youth Council.

Marilyn earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Education, achievements that reflected her lifelong commitment to learning. She spent her professional years in education and medical records management, admired for her thoroughness and her willingness to embrace new challenges. Among her proudest accomplishments was her role in starting girls’ basketball, as well as inspiring countless students to pursue higher education.

In August, 1969, Marilyn married the love of her life, Larry Jensen, whom she shared 56 years building a beautiful family.  Marilyn was the proud mother of four children – Jeremiah, Zachary, Alexander, and Caroline and the cherished grandmother to eight beloved grandchildren- Myles, Ellie, Emma, Myah, Kyrus, Olivia, Coralina, Kenndey. Her family was her joy, and she delighted in surprising her grandchildren with hand-crafted and elaborate holiday packages each year.

Creative and determined, Marilyn’s hobbies reflected her sharp intellect and artistic eye. Whether constructing an intricate wire-frame shark, constructing and staining a massive roll-top desk, or knitting a military insignia for her brother-in-law, she approached each project with care and precision. She also found meaning through service, actively participating in P.E.O., NSEA, and numerous church and community committees.

Visitation be held Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Roper and Sons South Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive, Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral services will follow on Friday, November 21, at 3.00 p.m. at Bennet Community Church, Bennet, with internment at the Bennet Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Alexander Jensen, Zachary Jensen, Jeremiah Jensen, Kyrus Jensen, Joseph Atkins, and Lucas Atkins.

Marilyn’s legacy of compassion, curiosity and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Share a Memory or Condolence

November 26, 2025

I have lots of memories from long ago in Sidney as a very young girl, then teenager, then high school friend. Then Marilyn married an old neighbor (from the airpark in Lincoln). She was a wonderful, sweet person. We will all miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are with Larry and the family.

How do I share a single memory of a terrific educator, mentor, mother, grandmother, and friend? Marilyn impacted my life in so many ways. She inspired me to become a Business educator. I am so fortunate to have Mrs. Jensen as a teacher and coach. Rest In Peace.

Marilyn sparked an interest in many of us to pursue a career in business. We especially enjoyed field trips to various business offices. I’m also very grateful that she started our girls’ basketball team – so many great memories! It was fascinating to read her history since I didn’t know about her life before and after Wilcox:)
