Obituary

Franklin Ellsworth Gaines

January 7, 1939 - November 8, 2025

Franklin Ellsworth Gaines, 86, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025. Frank was born in Lincoln, NE, on January 7, 1939, to Kenneth Sams and Floss Lenore (Chambers) Gaines. He married the love of his life, Darlene (Shaffer) Muffly, on February 17, 1989.

Frank graduated from Ashland Public Schools in 1956 and from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1960. While at Wesleyan, Frank was a 4-year letterman in football and achieved all-conference recognition.

Frank worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 34 years and taught income tax practitioners throughout the State of Nebraska for 40 years via the University of Nebraska Federal and State Income Tax Institute. He also officiated basketball and football for many years; highlights included 22 years in the Big Eight Conference, 10 bowl games, the 1967 Shrine Game, and the 1976 Boys’ State Basketball Tournament, which was the first game in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Frank also served several years on the Board of the Ashland-Greenwood Schools Foundation.

In retirement, Frank spent many days helping “Rope” at Paradise Valley, always starting with breakfast at Virginia’s Cafe and “working” until lunch, which meant beer-drinking time with hot dogs or brats, baked beans over the fire, and plenty of friendly banter. He and Dar loved traveling, and he especially enjoyed road trips, as long as they included packing a cooler with a six-pack. Once he warmed up to staying at bed and breakfasts, a whole new list of places opened up, with their favorites being Galena, Illinois, for the great food, and Depoe Bay, Oregon, for the amazing views.

Frank especially loved traveling with his family. He had the incredible experience of touring Ireland, Scotland, Paris, Austria, Prague, and the castles along the Rhine River with Andrew, the driver; Lisa, the tour guide; Winter, who read everything in the museums; and Weston, who always made sure they stopped for snacks. Frank and Dar also visited Washington, D.C., multiple times with different sets of grandkids, creating unforgettable memories. One of his favorite grandchild traditions was his Sunday routine. He enjoyed watching Brandy and Dar plan and cook Sunday brunch while Miss B recited ingredients and helped chop, stir, measure, and prepare the meal, all while sharing stories about her week. The day always ended with Dar, Frank, and Brandy enjoying an afternoon of bowling and beer.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Floss, and his brother Michael. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; his children Scott (Patrice) Gaines, Phil (Ann) Gaines, Mary (Steve) Mayfield, Andrew (Lisa) Muffly, and Shannon (John) Jarvis; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister Cathy (Steve) Mattoon; two nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.

At Frank’s request, there will be no services. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Food Bank of Lincoln or the Ashland-Greenwood Schools Foundation.

I remember meeting him with his children when they came to Sidney. He was a ref with one of our friends. He raised three wonderful children who he was so proud of. They adored him and looked up to him. He loved coming to western Nebraska to see his sister and family. I just don’t remember that he drank so much beer.
