Carter Robert Pendergrass, age 60, of Lincoln, NE passed away suddenly on October 9th, 2025. Carter was born on April 12, 1965, in Danville, IL, to Mary Jane and Donald Robert Pendergrass. He was raised in Independence, Missouri, alongside his twin sisters, Kathy and Kristy. During his youth, Carter was active in the Boy Scouts, ultimately earning the rank of Eagle Scout — a reflection of his dedication and character from an early age. After graduating high school, he went on to serve in the U.S. Army.

On March 7, 1992, Carter married Susan Larkin, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. He was a proud father to Phillip and Sydney, who were the greatest joys of his life, and an even prouder Papa to Dean, Arthur, and Stella. Carter’s family was the center of his world.

Carter dedicated 23 years to Windstream, his most recent position was Power Engineer III, where he was admired for his strong work ethic. Outside of his career, he loved spending time with his family, camping in the great outdoors, and sharing his knowledge through gun safety training. Known for his generosity and warmth, Carter never hesitated to lend a helping hand and never met a stranger. He also took great joy in supporting Susan with her many craft and home projects, always approaching them with enthusiasm and a smile.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Jane Pendergrass, his wife, Susan Rae (Larkin) Pendergrass, his son, Phillip Carter (Elizabeth) Pendergrass, his daughter Sydney Rae (Misha) Sayers. His grandchildren Arthur Winston Pendergrass, and Dean Grayson & Stella Rae Sayers. His sisters Kathy Jane (Kirk) Seeger and Kristy Marie Pendergrass. His nieces, Lauren Jane and Allison Marie Seeger and his nephew Collin Robert Seeger. He was preceded in death by his father Donald Robert Pendergrass. His grandparents Robert & Christine Pendergrass and Harold & Lena Carter.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his love for his family, his boundless generosity, and the openness of his heart. Though he grew up without a father, he became a father figure to many — a steady presence, a source of guidance, and a man others could count on. Once someone became part of his ever-growing circle, he held onto them with loyalty and care. And because of that, letting him go will be all the more difficult.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Southwood Lutheran Church (4301 Wilderness Hills Blvd, Lincoln, NE 68516).

Memorials are designated to K-9s for Warriors or International Hunter Education Association.

I have some really great memories of having photography with Carter! One winter day we decided to use our photography hall passes and run up to HiBoy! As soon as we pulled out on Noland rd we both noticed the red triumph convertible at the little car lot next to the school. We pulled in and some how talked the salesman into letting us take a test drive! We dropped the top even though it was winter and headed to HiBoy. Had to make a loop thru the school parking lot before taking it back to the dealership! No idea what we said to that salesman 😂 lol. No harm no foul. Just good fun! He was a good guy. Hadn’t talked to him since the war in Ukraine started and his son was helping to train their soldiers. He had concerns his son and our troops would get pulled into the conflict. Wished we had had more conversations over the years. Our condolences to his family

Condolences, Susan and family. I worked with and have known Susan from many years at Bryan. I never had the pleasure of meeting Carter, but I think I would have liked him. Susan’s wonderful memories will keep him near and dear forever.

Carter was like a second dad to me during my years as a Boy Scout in Troop 54. I always appreciated his kindness and can-do attitude that he brought to every scouting event. But most of all, I appreciated Carter’s sense of humor. One year at Camp Cornhusker, it had been raining nonstop all week. A few of us tried to stay optimistic, and some kids decided to skip their rain gear for the walk to breakfast. Carter, always prepared, had on the full setup: rain jacket, pants, and boots. Along the path there was a huge puddle, and a couple of mischievous boys ran ahead and jumped over it, turning to see if Carter would try to do the same. Instead, with perfect timing and a big grin, Carter jumped into the puddle, splashing the waiting boys completely. The whole group burst out laughing, and I still smile every time I think about it. He had a way of finding joy in any situation and will truly be missed.

Carter and I graduated together. We would drive out to Kansas our graduation summer and dance, dance, dance. (Yes he had some moves) We rode the same plane and bus to Basic Training at Ft McClellan AL. Carter kept in touch with me throughout the years never letting our friendship fade, even up to my birthday this year. I am sorry, I am going to miss him.
