Obituary

Janice L. Hughes

November 7, 1938 - September 19, 2025

Janice Lorraine (Owens) Hughes, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was called to her heavenly home on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born to Lyle and Evelyn (Schell) Owens on November 7, 1938. Janice was a loving wife, devoted mom, grandma, great grandma (GG), and cherished friend.

Jan married David Elwyn Hughes on June 15, 1957, and together they were blessed with five children: David B. Hughes (Donna Carnes), Valerie Johnson (Richard), Deanna Hughes, Michelle Hartley (Scott), and Heather Morse (Craig).

Jan retired as a paraprofessional after working at Hawthorne Elementary School for 25 years.  She was an active member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (formerly 2nd Presbyterian Church), where she dedicated her time as a Deacon, Stephen Minister, and a host of the Welcome Center.  She participated in Mission Trips and Bible study as well as assisted in leading Youth groups, and the annual Vacation Bible School. She was the 2019 Jerry Joyce Living Legacy Award Winner for her avid volunteerism.  Some of her other tireless efforts included the LPS Emergency Food Pantry, the People’s City Mission, the Barnabas project, singing Christmas carols to those unable to get out, and 20 years of helping out in her daughter Heather’s kindergarten classroom at Belmont. This is just a fraction of what Jan has done, and she still found time to be an amazing mom, grandma and great grandma.

Jan is survived by her beloved children, her brother Larry Owens (Ann), brother-in-law Art Hughes (Pat), sister-in-law Nancy Gamber.  Her 12 grandchildren: Jacob Sommers (Jenny), Ashley Rippe (Blake), Joshua Grossenbacher, Gavin Cummins (Amber), Dylan Hughes (Zhikai), Evan Hughes (friend Samone), Skyler Cummins (Jaelyn), Liam Hughes (friend Clair), Rhys Hughes, Mackenzie Pascoe (Ryan), Ry Morse, and Colby Morse. And 8 great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Laura, Allie and Emma Rippe; Ava and Thea Cummins, Henry Sommers, and Clayton Pascoe. Bonus grandchildren: Tyler Hartley (Tahmina), Megan Armstrong (Layne), and Courtney White (Holten). Bonus great grandchildren: Faith and Jordan Armstrong, Arthur White, and Nadia Hartley.

The Celebration of Life for Jan will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 29th, at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 8300 East Pointe Road, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church or Alzheimer’s Association. Deanna Hughes is volunteering at the 2025 Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, October 5, 2025, and she will personally deliver your check to support Alzheimer’s research.

It was such an honor to be able to care for Jan. She had such a big heart and was always wanting to help out when she could. I miss her laugh and the way her eyes would light up when she’d smile. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you! 💜

Our friendship is over 65 years old during which we shared watching our children grow up and become moms and dads. It provided us so many adventures, from getting lost on camping trips to getting lost on Table Rock Lake to getting lost on rides in the Ozarks…we once entered the same very little town of Blue Eye from all 4 directions without even trying!! Our fishing adventures were most abnormal, usually involving being hung up on one shore or the other, once on both shores…catching fish was secondary. One of my dearest memories was a day spent in the kitchen (One of Jan’s happiest places) helping her and other family members process apples, preparing apple pies for the freezer, for one thing. It was pure joy and fellowship!! We are so grateful for the many happy memories of times we shared in Lincoln, as well: plays, race nights, grilling at your house, GS Day Camp Your mom and dad were more family than friends. We loved them dearly and hold you close in our hearts.
