Obituary

Olelia A. (Hartsfield) Stubblefield

April 24, 1932 - July 20, 2025

Olelia Ann Hartsfield was the youngest child of John Wesley and Mary Savannah (Todd) Hartsfield. She was born in Cottage Grove, Tennessee on Wednesday, April 24, 1932 at 3:00 pm. At the age of four, she moved with her family to Farmington, Kentucky.

Olelia was bussed to the Mayfield Model country school outside of Mayfield, Kentucky, a great school, grades 1-6. Later her family moved from Farmington to 314 Pryor Street, Mayfield, Kentucky where she attended Dunbar Junior High and Dunbar High School where she held office assistant to the school principal.

She helped her mother with canning tomatoes, peaches, and green beans. Olelia was a cheerleader and active in school plays. She was always the first child to race across the school yard to the recreation hall where she would dance during her 30-minute recess period, because she loved to dance!!

Olelia asked her father John, “Where did my name come from?” He replied that he met a lady by that name while serving as a barber in the Army during World War I. He told the lady that he liked her name because it was unusual and vowed to someday give the name to his own daughter. He later named his second daughter Olelia.

Later, Olelia married W.H.T. “Mickey” Stubblefield, a legend of the Kansas City Monarchs, and they raised their family of ten in McCook, Nebraska.

Olelia loved to play cards (Bid Whist), even when losing a game, and she loves the blues especially listening to Johnnie Taylor and Little Milton. Her favorite actress was Hattie McDaniel from “Gone With the Wind”. Lastly, she loved to shop.

Olelia resided in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was employed with the Lincoln Public School System, later the Department of Motor Vehicles, from which she retired after many years of service. Olelia served in many organizations and is a former Vice President and member of the “National Council of Negro Women”; Board member of the Nebraska Planned Parenthood; member of the Lancaster County Commission of Women, and had a lifetime PTA Membership in the Lincoln Public Schools. She also held a position on the Lincoln Police Department Citizen Advisory Board.

Olelia was always a woman of God and a member of the “Church of Christ”.

She is preceded in death by her husband, W.H.T. “Mickey” Stubblefield; daughter Christy (Stubblefield) Harris; and son Stephen “Third World Oforah” (Stubblefield). Olelia leaves to carry on her legacy and memories through eight children: Six daughters: Janice Woody; Mary Arvin (Archie); Angela Smail (Bob); Risé Nielsen (Ron); Valerie Stubblefield; Julia Stubblefield; and Two sons: Mickey Stubblefield (Cheryl); Dennis Stubblefield. Also left to cherish her memory are Olelia’s 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services are to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025 at Roper and Sons South Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive in Lincoln.

A visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025 also at Roper and Sons South Chapel. Family will also be greeting friends 1 hour prior to the funeral service.

My last Great Aunt❤️I loved her ever since I was a child. She was the most Beautiful and I mean Beautiful , kind hearted person I have ever met and nobody loved family like she did. If you want to know how to love especially FAMILY, she is the one to follow. Gosh I’m gonna miss our messaging each other. I already missed her trips to KY that she adored as much as we did. Kiss your sister-in-law for me, my other Auntie who just passed in April. I will miss both of you. True Treasures. I will always love you both and will tell the next generation about my wonderful Great Aunties. Until we meet again

Sending hugs and love from Detroit to Aunt Olelia’s loved ones near and far. Her voice and her laughter is what I will always remember. She would speak on the phone to my dad, Albert, for hours and he affectionately called her the nickname Black. When I would speak to Auntie she would say, “you are my first great niece from my brother Harry so you are very special to my heart.” We shared the love of blues music and holiday memories. I will forever speak her name and share her legacy of love and friendship. 💕

My sincere condolences to all of the family with the passing of this lovely lady! I wish I’d known Olelia better in McCook, but I do recall what a beautiful couple she and Mickey made! I really enjoyed being her friend on Facebook where it was obvious that faith and family were most important to her of all of life’s joys. What excitement she must have felt when God welcomed her to Heaven with a big “Well done!” greeting. ✨

Mrs. Stubblefield was my 2nd grade assistant teacher. I cannot recall the names of the numerous teachers I encountered growing up but I will never forget Mrs. Stubblefield nor the impact she has had on my life from my early years. She freely gave her love and encouragement to me and to those around her. I don’t return back to my home state often but when I did I always asked to visit her. I am so very grateful that I was able to see her just this last month of June. My trips home will not be the same. I send love to her entire family. I’m a so deeply sorry for your loss but I know the love she had for her family lives on. It will certainly live on within me.

“Stubbs” was always a good hearted, kind, funny friend to me when I lived in Lincoln. She remained the same after I moved away, and has always been a very special person to me. Although I have not seen her, or her family, in quite some time, she (they) have continued to be in my heart and thoughts. My deepest condolences go to her family, and my deepest kindest thoughts go to “Stubbs”.

Aunt Olelia, I will treasure our phone conversations you were always so sweet and was so happy to hear from me. You always ended the conversation, “ I love you honey”. You had so much wisdom and I could talk to you about anything. One thing she loved talking about was her brothers. She often told me how good her brother (Mott) was to her and we had the common connection for the love of her brother and for me the love I had for him as my father. I will always remember the good times we had when you came to Detroit visiting every Christmas holiday. One Christmas break we all went to see Little Milton in concert and she was so excited especially after the concert we met and shook his hand. She loved that moment! I would like to express my heartfelt Condolences to Aunt Olelia’s children, grandchildren and great grand children. Thank you for sharing her with me. I’m praying for all you during this very difficult time. For my Cousins, I have walking in these shoes too. May God give to strength to get through this and remember the good times. As long as you live she lives within you!! Love all of you!!!😘🫂🫂 Love, Jackie
