Chauncey “Adam” Barney

February 15, 1976 - May 24, 2025

Chauncey “Adam” Barney, 49, of Lincoln, passed away on May 24, 2025. Born on February 15, 1976, to Robert and Leontine (Betts) in Lincoln, NE.

Adam loved computers. From an early age he showed an interest in computer science, mathematics and physics. Adam’s love of math and physics lead him to be part of the high school Science Olympiad team, where he competed locally and across the county against other high schoolers. The friends he made in school were life long friends.

A graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School, he went to UNL for a physics degree and there met his future wife Teresa. Upon graduating from UNL, Adam pursued his dream of programming and began working at Design Data. Wasn’t long after that Avery was born, and Adam became a doting father. Isaac was born 6 years later and after a short amount of time Adam decided to go into business for himself as a computer consultant and computer programmer convention organizer where Nebraska.Code () was born.

He was self employed for several years, and the opportunity to work for a major corporation came to his attention. He began to work for Rocket Mortgage and was a successful programmer and manager, until the housing collapse in 2023. He then went to work for a local company called Travefy.

Adam was a Microsoft MVP from 2013-2018, and the 2014 Kent Tegels Community Spirit Award recipient.

Adam was also a lifelong Husker sports fan. He also enjoyed yearly trips to his heart place, Ten Mile Lake, in northern Minnesota. Other interests include 3 D model/printing, staying abreast of current technology, drinking good bourbon, guitar picking with Isaac and grilling with his daughter with an Old Fashioned in hand.

Adam is survived by his wife of 27 years Teresa; children Avery and Isaac; father Robert; sister, Lisa (Justin) Link, niece Claire and nephew Mason. Several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother, maternal and paternal grandparents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, at 2:00PM at Roper and Sons South Chapel (3950 Hohensee Dr.)

Adam was my dear friend for 34 years. He was a wonderful person with a warm heart and full of laughter. In high school, no weekend went by without doing something fun with Adam. He was the social glue, who brought our group together. Adam was always proud to declare, “I’m a nerd,” whether on one of the T-shirts we’d design and unashamedly wear around school or as the opening sentence on his LinkedIn bio 30 years later. As nerds, our high school science team was unstoppable. Under the leadership of our phenomenal coach, Jake Winemiller, we won Science Olympiad twice at state level advancing to Nationals. Our Science Bowl team advanced to Nationals our senior year. As nerds, we mounted a campaign blitz that saw our friend, Steuard Jensen, elected prom King, disrupting the longstanding social conventions of prom royalty. We were regulars of the chess club and had an amazing unchaperoned trip to Kansas City for a chess meet. As nerds, we also did some monumentally stupid things. We built a bridge for Science Olympiad that was so poorly designed and constructed, it collapsed under its own weight. We built an enormous Rue Goldberg device without realizing, until after the fact, that it was too big to get out the door. Senior year, we planted crocuses all over the school yard to leave behind as a perennial legacy, and they completely failed to grow. But no matter the outcome, we laughed and had fun. Recalling these little memories reminds me how formative and special our friend groups are in high school and how they help set the trajectories of our lives. I am so grateful to Adam and how he influenced me personally and so many others. I am so sorry for this tragic and unexpected loss. Rest in peace, my friend.

Such a gentle spirit and a clever young man who was a great help to his Father. I can still hear Bob as he followed the new cordless mower around the lake property praising Adam for his thoughtful purchase. If Bob had any need, especially concerning electronic equipment, Adam was eager to help.

Adam was such a bright light in the life of everyone he met. Adam approached each day, sports activity, social outing, computer programming seminar, with laughter and joy. Anything Adam enjoyed or did, he wanted to be the absolute best. Adam will be greatly missed. My heart is with his family and friends in this time.

I met Adam at Nebraska Book back in 2010. He and Ken started the Nebraska Code Conference not too long after which I attended. And of course more recently I have had the pleasure of working with him again at Travefy. He was a remarkable person and I’m going to miss him a ton. Lincoln won’t be the same without him.
