Obituary

Gregg A. Widholm

August 28, 1961 - November 12, 2024

Gregg Alan Widholm was born to Marvin Widholm and Sandra Wilson on August 28, 1961. He departed this world on November 12, 2024 at the age of 63. He was born in Cozad and raised in Gothenburg, Nebraska. He graduated from Kearney State College with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Gregg’s strong work ethic began early as he worked multiple jobs while attending college. He had no way of knowing that his job as a bartender at the Eagles Club and flirting with the kitchen help would have lifetime consequences. At the age of 21, he began dating a 17-year-old girl named Paula, and five years later they were married on October 10, 1987. They moved to Lincoln and made it their permanent home. Gregg was a committed and loving husband who will be missed greatly by Paula as they were truly soul mates.

Gregg became a proud father of twins on June 25, 1998 with the birth of his daughter Makenna and son Garrett. He was an engaged father who cherished every stage of his children’s lives. He was proud of their recent accomplishments of completing college degrees, starting careers, and purchasing starter homes. He thoroughly enjoyed having adult children and seeing them spread their wings and fly.

He put family time first but also enjoyed shining his 1953 Chevy Truck, riding his 2003 Harley Road King Classic, cheering on the Husker football and volleyball teams, and weekly Boiler Beer Therapy get-togethers with the guys.  He embraced being the kids’ contractor/handyman/repairman and taught them lifelong lessons. He was the ultimate protector and a wealth of knowledge for those around him.

Gregg touched countless lives throughout the various stages of his life. He loved staying in touch by texting birthday and anniversary wishes, but nothing pleased him more than drawing friends together for a garage party. He was a cornerstone of the neighborhood.

Gregg worked in the world of telecommunications and ATM transactions. He enjoyed the challenges of working with technology and loved building connections with colleagues and coworkers. Gregg worked as a Telecommunications Manager at NetWorks, Inc. in Lincoln for nearly 30 years. He then worked remotely as a Sales Engineer for Transaction Network Services (TNS) based out of Reston, Virginia for three years. Wanting a career change away from technology and stepping closer to retirement, Gregg most recently worked for White Electric Supply of Lincoln delivering electrical components to residential and commercial locations in and around Lincoln.

Gregg and Paula also owned a successful business. The Husker Lawn & Leisure Show grew each of the 21 years, and while Paula managed it, she could always count on Gregg to be her sidekick and Gregg even acquired the nickname “Guido” when money needed to be collected.

Left to mourn the gigantic hole left in this world are his wife, Paula Widholm, Lincoln, NE; daughter Makenna Widholm, Lincoln, NE; son Garrett Widholm, Lincoln, NE; mother Sandra Widholm, Gothenburg, NE; sister Patti Widholm, Allen, TX; brother Daryl Widholm, Gothenburg, NE; sister Sharyl Munster, Gothenburg, NE; brother-in-law Michael Ripp, Kearney NE; sister-in-law Cheryl Royle, Kearney, NE; nieces and nephews; and many friends. Gregg was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Widholm, Gothenburg, NE; father-in-law Kenneth Ripp, Kearney, NE; and mother-in-law Mona Ripp, Kearney, NE.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd, 2024 at Roper and Sons South Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive, Lincoln, NE 68516. Livestream at roperandsons.com.

So many great memories of Greg. The one that comes to mind is when you guys invited us over and I asked what I could bring and he said anything…and I cooked an oxtail. We laughed and laughed that night. He was such an amazing human and good guy. He will be so missed. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Paula, We were so saddened to hear of the loss of Greg and send our deep sympathies to you and your kids. Greg was Rich’s best roommate ever, and of course a friend, so fun to be around. Sorry we’ve lost contact over the years, but the memories remain.

I met Gregg back in the late 80’s when we lived about a block apart. He (they) were walking their dobi and I my G.S… We hit it off pretty quick and became good friends. Unfortunately as life happens we both built new houses in 2000 they in Lincoln and us moving out of town and as usually happens lost touch over the years. Was shocked and saddened to hear of Greggs passing…Paula and the kids were his everything… that I know.. Prayers for Paula, the kids and the family in their time of this loss..

Gregg never left Paula’s side. They were a duo that worked great together. A type of marriage that I look up to. What a great guy!!! Will always know him as a hard worker and an even keel guy that was a fixer!

I’m so sorry for your loss. Your family is always is and has been the kindest I’ve known. During these hard times please know that death takes a life, not the relationship. He will always be loved by many! Stay strong, wish you well.

So sorry to learn of this. Shocked. He was one of the good ones. Great memories for me when I think of Widdy! Many fun times so much so when the kids came to LSW, we knew each of us had enough dirt on the other that we could share with the kids but agreed neither would share.
