I had the honor to work with Roscoe many years at UNL in Teachers College. Roscoe was the Assistant Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. In that role he was responsible for building the schedule of classes and assignments for faculty members. While Roscoe was an artistic and creative man, we was organized and precise in his work. He solved many problems because of the trust faculty had in him. Pam and I admired Roscoe and Leona for the love and respect they showed one another. What a team! As they would tell stories they combined their thought to make the story funny and coherent. He loved the Air Stream (trailer) caravan trips he had Leona took for many, many years. He brought back sketches and interesting stories about their experiences from across the US. What a great man!

Dr. Shield’s and I recently had the pleasure of visiting following a volunteer sing-a-long that I played for at the Legacy. Following the songs, Dr. Shield’s said “Oh those songs reminded me of attending the little church where I grew up”. The life-style enrichment lady said “How nice Roscoe”. That’s when I turned from the piano and asked, “Is that by chance Roscoe Shield’s? Because if it is, he was my television art instructor when I was a little girl attending May Morley here in Lincoln.” What a meeting we had as I introduced myself to him and told how the teacher would take our class to the auditorium, we’d watch his t.v. instruction/demonstration then later in the week be given the chance to try the art project in our classroom! Such happy memories! So, the music I played brought Dr. Shield’s fond memories and talking to him brought me back fond memories as well. He was also pleased to hear that I had become a teacher with the LPS and now was retired. Dr. Shield’s mannerisms were so very kind. My blessings of comfort to the family. I will miss Dr. Shield’s on future volunteer-sings at the Legacy.

For my wife, Tina, and I, Roscoe and Leona Shields were two of the finest people we’d met throughout the years of our life-long membership in the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, commonly known as the Airstream Club. Sadly, we learned late of Leona’s passing in 2018. What a gracious lady she was. Now, we learn of Roscoe’s passing and we sense the end to a certain level of the people we met in the club. Always ready to lend a helping hand, particularly to new club members, these two incredible individuals embodied and embellished all the characteristics of Wally Byam’s ideas of good Airstreamers. We moved on in the club in 2007, so we had not seen either Roscoe or Leona since then. But we will long treasure our memories of them and the camping and caravaning we did together with them across our country. We were abundantly blessed to know them. Walk well, our friends.
