Madelyn was special: kind, deeply spiritual, incredibly curious. She searched for ways to help those around her; indeed, she pulled me out of periods of self-absorption on more than one occasion by enlisting my help on these service expeditions. I learned much about Orthodox Christianity from Madelyn, from her discussion of lives of the saints based on entries in the Synaxarion, her overview of the many icons in the nave of St. John of Kronstadt Orthodox Church, and stories about her own spiritual journey. In the days soon after St. John of Kronstadt Church joined the OCA, I recall a Pre-Sanctified Liturgy that was sparsely attended so that Madelyn was one of the few voices singing hymns. The gentleness of her voice amidst waning, early evening light transported me to a restful place. I was touched by her genuine curiosity about other religious faiths and the relationship between science and religion, which we discussed occasionally. I will treasure my memories of Madelyn.

We honor the life of Madelyn Lloyd. My earliest memory of my bold, brave baby sister is her beautiful first hairdo, big golden yellow ringlets, all natural, that capped her head. Like all little girls, we loved to play dress-up. Mom had two dressy outfits: each with a dress, broad-brimmed hat and matching shoes, one all in navy, the other in brown. I always praised the brown one to Madelyn and got the navy one for myself, until one day when she said words to this effect: “If the brown one is better, why are you giving it to me?” Madelyn was the trail-blazer, the seeker, the mover and the shaker. Her final gift to me was a reading we did together on the phone just some months ago. It was a book she chose, “Interpreting the Bible and the Constitution” by Jaroslav Pelikan. For many days over a period of several weeks, we slogged through it, working as hard as we could to understand. And so, we learned and grew together. One more thing to say: to tell Sheila of my gratitude for all the love and support she gave Madelyn for all these many years.

Madelyn was my best friend in my youth. We went on different paths after HS, but reconnected via FB in the last few years. I treasure my memories of many days spent together after school. She was fun, kind and a great friend. I am glad she found a loving community in Lincoln. Condolences to her family.

Madeline was such a wonderful neighbor. A welcoming smile mornings out watering flowers and the front lawn. Loved her family and the neighborhood with wonderful stories of history and friendships. Will miss her like a mother, beautifully.

One of my memories of Madelyn is from back in the mid 1980s when we were part of the Christian Community of Lincoln. A bunch of us from there decided to walk from I believe, Pawnee State Lake to the Blue River State Recreation area (on Highway 6, north of Dorchester, NE). We’d camped at Pawnee the evening before, then walked on country roads to Blue River Rec. Area where we again camped. During the night, Madelyn came to our (mine and Randy’s) tent and woke us. She was having some feet and leg pain, and was in a state of almost despair from the exhaustion and pain. She was thinking we needed to take her to a hospital. We prayed with her until she started to calm down and she decided she didn’t need to go to the hospital. We walked her back into her tent, where we prayed some more, and just talked with her. I remember us all getting quite tired, and Randy said the Lord’s Prayer with Madelyn and myself. We ended up just staying in Madelyn’s tent that night, and I used one of her rather large shoes as my pillow! In the morning, Madelyn was fully recovered! Madelyn was a rare gem in our lives, and we are truly blessed to have known her for so many years in our faith journey.
