It was late afternoon on September 15, 2003 and we were returning to Nebraska from the funeral of our brother Charlie. Our son Greg who lives in Colorado had driven us to St. Louis. Charlie had died at 89 having lived a long full life-- buried 3 wives all victims of cancer--and his only son killed in a plane crash. He was a special person to his numerous nieces and nephews.
The three of us were deep in our own reminiscing and memories when just out of Columbia, Missouri on busy I-70 our front tire blew out. The first miracle was that we didn't crash but rather eased to a stop within 20 feet of an exit. We left the station wagon to unload the treasures and memorabilia we had brought from Charlie's home in order to get to the emergency tire.
Without incident, Greg replaced the damaged tire and we started on our way knowing that we couldn't return to our home in Falls City, Nebraska , a distance of 250 miles, without a new tire.
As we were driving up the EXIT ramp Greg remarked. "I t sure was nice of that man to stop and offer help." We looked at each other incredulously almost in unison said, " What man?" " The man driving that white Miata Masda convertible!" was his response. Greg continued, "The man asked if we needed help and I told him I thought everything was under control. I asked him if he lived close by and knew where we could get a replacement tire"
"Just turn left when you get off the EXIT ramp" the man responded.
We turned left, not to find just a gas station, but a tire shop equipped to replace all four of our weather worn tires.
Greg was so grateful for that information and the aid offered by the stranger. We looked at each other in amazement. We had seen no man dressed in a white suit, no one driving a white Masda convertible. We had heard no conversation with anyone.
Was that Charlie's guardian angel, no longer needed on earth, seeing that we got safely home, or Greg's guardian angel averting a tragic accident .
